Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf got the wicket of opener Shubman Gill to leave India in deep trouble in the Asia Cup match.
India lost their fourth wicket for 66. It is now down to Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya to get them out of the woods after pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Rauf took two wickets each.
Earlier, play had resumed after a short drizzle. More than 50 minutes of play was lost because of the two interruptions but luckily no overs were lost.
Rain had halted play for a second time with India in a spot of bother at 51-3 in 11.2 overs. The efficient ground staff in Pallekele were quick to get the covers back on.
Earlier, India had lost their third wicket that of Shreyas Iyer, with the batsman falling to Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf. The third wicket fell with India’s score on 48.
India had lost the wickets of captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Afridi accounted for both the batsmen, having them bowled for 11 and 4 respectively.
Moments earlier, rain had halted play with India on 15-0 in 4.2 overs, as the covers had came on and 33 minutes were lost. Thankfully, no overs were lost despite the rain.
India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss earlier and elected to bat against Pakistan with the threat of rain looming over the blockbuster Asia Cup match on Saturday.
Intermittent rain all through the morning has kept ground staff on their feet in Pallekele, where a thin crowd is watching the hotly anticipated 50-over match in a preamble to next month’s ODI World Cup.
The sun peeked through the clouds during the toss and Rohit said India, who play their opening match of the tournament, were ready to “embrace the challenge”.
Fit-again Jasprit Bumrah returns to the ODI team alongside Shreyas Iyer, who is also back from injury. India will play with three seamers and two spinners.
Babar Azam’s Pakistan crushed Asia Cup debutants Nepal in the tournament opener early this week and named an unchanged team on Friday for the key group contest against their arch-rivals.
Azam said he would have also batted first had he won the toss.
The match is the first of potentially three tournament clashes between the two giants of Asian cricket.
